“Sunny Diversity” is a vibrant mural co-created by French illustrator Elsa Martino and ninth-grade students from Joséphine Baker Middle School during a workshop from July 5-7. Highlighting the importance of inclusive environmental discussions, the mural incorporates diverse voices. Elsa and climate trainer Chloé Chesneau guided students through creative and reflective activities, culminating in this public art piece. The mural is located at 54 Rue des Rosiers, Saint-Ouen, on the school’s facade.

Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine, located approximately 6.6 kilometers from Paris, is renowned for its diverse and culturally rich community. For French citizens, global warming and air pollution have emerged as the primary environmental concerns, while awareness of biodiversity issues also grew significantly. By involving the citizens of this vibrant suburb, we aimed to draw upon their diverse perspectives and insights to enrich the conversation around environmental issues.

Celine Columbel, Art teacher

“Ecology is incredibly important because it shapes the future for everyone, young and old alike. It's not just about where we are now, but where we're headed. Our relationship with ecology extends to how we interact with other people, animals, nature, and the oceans essentially, it's about our place in the world. This activity allowed the students to be sensitized to these issues.”

Islam Chebiha, Student

“During these activities, I learned some important things. One of the most significant realizations was the rapid melting of ice blocks at the North Pole, which is happening increasingly due to how we treat the Earth. This is a direct result of human activities. We must take better care of the Earth by adopting sustainable practices and making more environmentally conscious decisions.”
