Last month, Paint the Change hosted a three-part art and poetry workshop series at @bowschoolofficial on the American abolitionist Frederick Douglass for Black History Month.
Frederick Douglass escaped slavery in America in the 19th Century and became a leader of the abolitionist movement, fighting for the end of slavery through public speaking and writing. His autobiography was a huge success and influenced generations to come. He attributed his success as a politician, orator, author and free man to learning to read and write as a child, despite slaves not being allowed to be educated.
Spoken word poet @mrgeepoet helped students explore themes of injustice, education and freedom, reflecting on how Frederick Douglass’s life and antislavery work is still relevant in today’s political climate.
Street artist @atmastudio then led a series of art activities encouraging students to expand on these themes through visual creativity.
Their artwork will inform the design of a future mural in London. Keep your eyes peeled!
